From far off, the cardiac metronome of a train.
In the down-right corner, bricks and ember bloom
before three hooded figures, grouped
as those before a tomb, funeral-black.
Each cradles the private scarab of their worship,
talismans by which to know them
in other scenes, in other guises.
They here appear in youth:
In M40 coat, and rogatywka cap, a man
not yet three decades. His look hooks the flame,
sparks blue. He spools a jewel-hued thread from his
bread-bag,
wields a needle whose eye sights the future.
